Clean Up Australia at Mills Beach and Foreshore Reserve 2025
From Site co-ordinator of the Mills Beach and Foreshore Clean Up site…
The annual Clean Up Australia event took place at Mills Beach on Sunday March 2. We had a good turnout, including a number of families and some younger couples. Forty one people attended in total, including 14 children (admittedly a couple of these were quite young but were very keen to take a pair of tongs). Pleasingly some young people were interested in the work of MEA and took membership forms. I will follow this up. A breakdown of attendance is given below.
With that many volunteers we extended the clean up over Red Bluff to Shire Hall and Scouts beaches and foreshores.
About ten bags of assorted rubbish were collected, a bit less than last year and following the pattern of the diminishing returns over last few years. Unfortunately there still some inaccessible places where rubbish continues to accumulate (especially the cliff tops near the lookouts and the steep slope from the Herbert St car carpark). For the first time for quite a few years some sharps were found, these were further up the estuary and probably were washed down the creek at some time. No big or interesting items were found although some pieces of asbestos and an old car battery were a bit unusual.
Many thanks to all volunteers, I hope to see you all again next year.

I have been coordinating the Clean Up at Mills for twelve years now and am ready (and very willing!) to hand it over to someone else.
I will happily hand over to the successful applicant all the paraphernalia I’ve accumulated over the years (except for the maps, which belong to MEA but will be made available, as they are essential for the Clean Up day itself).
The task is not especially onerous, in fact you don’t need to do anything much for 51 weeks (except correspond with the Clean Up organization a few times). The remaining week involves a few hours organizing stuff a few days before and packing it into the car; and of course, running the day itself, which does require some knowledge of the area (which I will be happy to pass onto you if necessary). Very little paperwork is required. Please let me know if you feel you have the time to help out.
