After considering the recommendations of the expert panel, the Minister for Planning, Richard Wynne, has decided NOT to approve this project.  His decision was based on the fact that AGL’s proposal would have posed an unacceptable risk to the nearby World-Heritage-declared RAMSAR site, which comprises mangroves and wetlands.

The proposed FSRU ( Floating Storage Regassification Unit ) would have regularly discharged large amounts of chlorine into Westernport Bay, adjacent to the RAMSAR site.  Chlorine is toxic to marine organisms that live in the mangroves and wetlands.

The panel received a huge number of objections from councils, many groups, including MEA, and individuals.
