Susan Young (from Mornington Beach Patrol) has sent me these tips for dealing with recyclables…
Tips on Recycling in Mornington
- Loose untethered plastic bottle caps #2, #4, #5 and good quality tiny fish-shaped soy sauces go to Susanna Weber’s research on recycled plastic (Circular Peninsula, recently launched), or place them in a secure ice cream tub or similar in your kerbside recycle bin (or onto a plastic bottle, see CDS), else they slip through and end up in landfill. Some artists/schools use bottle caps in crafts too.
- Pharmacy pill and tablet blister packs – Chemist Warehouse Mornington-Tyabb Rd store, far right corner
- Plastic bread ties – The Bays hospital reception have a collection jar for bread tags which they then use to make wheelchairs for people overseas. Also can be taken to Dromana Community House, see Cindy at BP cleans or take them there yourself if passing by.
- CDA (Container deposit Scheme) -Plastic bottles up to 3L, single use glass bottles, aluminium cans, tetra pack liquid paperboard drinks like Just Juice and Big M etc are Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) items worth 10c each at Return-It, 42 Watt Rd Mornington where there are Reverse Vending Machines (RVM) you feed into via a chute and the total dollar amount is either put out as a QR coded ticket you wave in front of a display panel and cash in at the cash dispenser on site or donate to a charity of your choice. BP Australia is auto listed (zone ID C2000001025 if not). Squashed, label-less, tatty, or torn items with holes or breaks can be processed manually by staff, so don’t chuck them out as you’ll just be burying your money. If you’re unsure, take what you’ve got and let them judge. Return-It depots and staff do vary, but they’re very reasonable there, it’s the tenth busiest in Vic. Arrange the money to be directly deposited into your account if you like.
- Coffee Cups/straws – Many are now compostable. Check print on cups and if they have a central hole lid. Others most likely have a plastic lining – not compostable; plastic lids and straws are also unsustainable but 7-Eleven have partnered with Simply Cups and have in-store vertical chutes. Ten million saved from landfill already. If you’re not sure, take to 7-Eleven Keep cups will always be better, it’s just a good habit. Simply Cups | 7-Eleven
- E waste Batteries, and vapes have chemicals + batteries, a recipe for disaster. Take to the tip to be recycled, or council buildings or Officeworks for some e waste, otherwise tell me. I take vapes to the tip regularly.
- Fishing tackle can be recycled through Rig Recycle.
- Polystyrene can be recycled 100% through Styrocycle , so don’t send it to landfill. It’s the greatest recycle story of all but it’s still awful stuff and some industries are exempt from its ban.
Thanks Susan
