Mornington Peninsula Zero Waste

Mornington Peninsula Zero Waste

Last year a new network was established on our peninsula to help hospitality and leisure businesses to divert organic waste from landfill,

This has got off to a great start,  collecting coffee grounds and other food waste for recycling or repurposing rather than being sent to the tip.

Their website, https://mpzerowaste.com.au,  is well worth looking at and includes newsletters summarising recent work.

Mornington Peninsula Zero Waste

At Mornington Peninsula Zero Waste we are helping to build out the circular economy on our beautiful peninsula by assisting local hospitality and leisure businesses to ensure their waste is repurposed locally (or recycled where applicable), rather than being sent to landfill.

From their first newsletter, October 2022:

Welcome to the first of what I intend to be a regular Newsletter regarding our efforts to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill on the Peninsula.

Introduction

October has seen two new cafes – The Winey Cow and Luup – join a growing network of hospitality and leisure businesses with whom we are collaborating.

To support these clients we now have access to over 3,000 litres of compost bin capacity, with more being added each month. (Feel free to pass this Newsletter on to anyone you think might be interested in participating as a composter).

Localisation

The example of Luup illustrates that localisation will be a key differentiator of Mornington Peninsula Zero Waste as a service provider.

The food waste / coffee grounds from this cafe will now be composted at a private residence in Mt Eliza, just 5,000 metres away, reducing costs and making the whole network more efficient.

Analytics

In the next few weeks I will begin to track the volume (and profile) of waste being diverted, and this process will help me to refine the specification for a software application which will help to manage growth of the network.

Beach Patrol 3931

I have been reaching out to like-minded community groups of late, and as part of that process have been asked to step in as the co-ordinator for Beach Patrol in Mornington.

Beach Patrol volunteers gather once a month to clean public beaches and log their litter in the LitterStopper app.

This decentralised, community-based approach to litter is very complementary to the outcomes which I am seeking to achieve with commercial food waste.

As always feedback welcome.

Cheers

Ashley
