Help Victoria update its ‘code of practice for bushfire management on public land’

Victoria is updating its ‘code of practice for bushfire management on public land’

Remember when the forests in Dandenong Ranges National Park were on the chopping block? And how our collective action helped dramatically reduce the ‘storm clean-up’ damage?

Well, if we had a Bushfire Code of Practice based on real evidence for protecting communities, wildlife and landscapes, none of that would’ve been necessary.

We actually have that opportunity. Victoria is updating its ‘code of practice for bushfire management on public land’.

Can you help by taking their quick survey? This is our chance for an evidence-led Code that truly protects community, wildlife and landscapes.

Quick survey: Help crack the Bushfire Code
We’ve gathered a long list of examples of poorly thought-out bushfire operations. Hundreds of precious hollow-bearing trees have been destroyed. Endangered wildlife and their homes are taking the brunt.

This is our chance to crack the Code. What fire managers do on public land (outside of emergency periods) must be evidence-based. It must be guided by clear goals. There must be accountability.

The survey will take a couple of minutes, and only has eight check boxes and one comment field.

Quick survey: Help crack the Bushfire Code

Bushfire preparation is vital to protect communities. But it doesn’t have to happen at the cost of our precious web of life.

We need to use science and common sense to look after nature and the safety of fire fighters. We need transparency and oversight of the impacts fire operations have on habitat and wildlife. This is how land managers learn and deepen their knowledge.

Let’s make sure wildlife protection is an integral part of the Bushfire Code.
